Hebrides Violin

My favorite piece of music ever is Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture. This past summer I was able to visit Fingal's Cave, the natural phenomenon in Scotland that inspired Mendelssohn to write the overture. I loved Scotland, but that cave in particular was just wonderful beyond words. Its massive basalt pillars were formed entirely naturally on the island of Staffa, just a short stretch of ocean away from the Isle of Mull, and the water and wind echo through the depths of the cave like music. To honor my love of both Mendelssohn's piece and the overture, I decided to paint a wooden violin-shaped plaque with an image of Fingal's Cave.
